
En la actualidad, abundantes evidencias neuroanatómicas y neurofisiológicas demuestran que los animales son capaces de sentir dolor y que por lo menos en el caso de los mamíferos, los mecanismos de transducción, transmisión, modulación y percepción de los estímulos nocivos, son similares, en general, a los hallados en los seres humanos. La principal diferencia existente entre el hombre y los animales, es su capacidad de manifestar de forma explícita su dolor. Es por lo anterior que el médico veterinario necesita conocer la forma correcta de evaluar la intensidad y el tipo dolor de sus pacientes, con el fin de brindarles el tratamiento adecuado y garantizar el bienestar necesario para que desarrollen con normalidad sus actividades productivas y afectivas.
