Abstract

By analysing a corpus of television and radio programmes, our research aims at studying from a qualitative point of view the most frequent phonetic and prosodic phenomena of the Quebecois French that is spoken in the media. Some presenters of the public channels concentrate on their pronunciation, even if they have some typical variants of Quebecois French, e.g. the assibilation of /t, d/. Instead, thespeakers of private channels have a less correct pronunciation, characterised, for example, by rhotacisms, allophones of /a, / and numerous variants of oral diphthongs. The analysis also revealed that the accentual pattern of Quebecois French is different from the alternation of stressed (S) and non-stressed (s) syllables from right to left typical of Hexagonal French. In particular, some patterns S s S are reorganised into S S S if the segmental content allows it.
