Levanduľa spôsobila významné zvýšenie počtu mitoticky aktívnych buniek v hile hipokampu u samcov a samíc a v subgranulárnej zóne u samíc v porovnaní s depresívnymi zvieratami, pričom počet buniek dosiahol úroveň proliferácie prekurzorov zdravých jedincov. Levanduľa teda môže byť schopná zvýšiť proliferačnú aktivitu hipokampálnych prekurzorov počas depresie. ABSTRACT Depression is a common neurological disorder affecting almost every fourth person during the life. Natural substances do not have side effects at a certain dose, and could potentially supplement the standard treatment. Lavender is used in traditional medicine because of its presumed antidepressant properties as an aromatherapeutic agent. There are some indices assuming that lavender may act at hippocampal level. Thus, this study aims to determine the effects of lavender extract on the proliferative activity of hippocampal precursors during stress-induced depression in Wistar rats. Lavender caused a significant increase in the number of mitotically active cells in hilus of hippocampus in males and females and subgranular zone in females when compared to depressive animals, with cell numbers reaching the precursor proliferation level of healthy subjects. Thus, lavender may be able to increase proliferative activity of hippocampal precursors during depression.
