PLÁGIOS E A INVISIBILIZAÇÃO DO TRADUTOR:

Abstract

O objetivo deste artigo é evidenciar a invisibilidade do tradutor a partir dos plágios recorrentes nas traduções do Origin of species, de Charles Darwin (1809-1882), para o português. Embora tenha sido traduzida para diversos idiomas ainda no tempo de vida do autor, a primeira edição portuguesa, traduzida pelo médico Joaquim Dá Mesquita Montenegro Paúl (1875-1946), feita indiretamente a partir da tradução francesa de Edmond Barbier, foi publicada apenas em 1913. Esta tradução seguiu sendo a única disponível por décadas e encontrava-se facilmente no Brasil, devido ao comércio livreiro transatlântico. Na década de 1970, contudo, iniciou-se uma longa tradição de plágios do texto de Paúl no Brasil, inundando o mercado com diversas edições e reimpressões alienadas de seu tradutor original. A Hemus foi pioneira na prática e licenciou seu material para diversas outras editoras, mas a Martin Claret, a Madras e a Pradense também contribuíram com seus próprios plágios que, por vezes, levaram à publicação de traduções verdadeiras como forma de retratação. Assim, em um contexto de transferência cultural da obra de Darwin da Inglaterra, passando pela França para então chegar a Portugal e, finalmente, ao Brasil, buscamos discutir a prática de plágio enquanto uma apropriação mercadológica que invisibiliza ao máximo o tradutor.
