Mamíferos de Venezuela: lista actualizada 2023 y comentarios taxonómicos

Abstract

Se presenta una lista actualizada de los mamíferos registrados en Venezuela, que comprende 409 especies categorizadas en 14 órdenes, 49 familias y 193 géneros. Ello representa un aumento de 2 familias, 9 géneros y 19 especies con respecto a la lista publicada en el 2012; un total de 33 especies (8,0%) son endémicas del país. Los órdenes más diversos son Chiroptera (42,3%) y Rodentia (25%), que juntos representan dos tercios (67%) del número total de especies. Desde la última recopilación nacional, se describieron 16 nuevas especies, se aceptaron 36 cambios taxonómicos, se incluyeron 7 nuevos registros geográficos y se excluyeron 40 especies. De las 6.544 especies vivientes registradas a nivel mundial, el 6,3% tienen poblaciones en el país. De las especies evaluadas por la UICN (2023) y por el Libro Rojo de la Fauna Venezolana (2015) un total de 28 (6,8 %) y 60 (14,3%) respectivamente, fueron clasificadas dentro de alguna categoría de amenaza global. En este trabajo se siguieron los criterios establecidos por Sánchez & Lew (2012), al tiempo que se revisaron diversas publicaciones científicas y se consultaron bases de datos nacionales e internacionales. Con esta actualización, se busca contribuir al inventario de la diversidad biológica del país y servir de documento técnico de referencia para el estudio de las amenazas que enfrentan sus ecosistemas.
