New Suggestions for Personal Names on a Group of 'Western Asia Minor' Balance Weights from the Roman Imperial Period at the Pera Museum

Abstract

Bu yeni pazar yeri sorumlularının adları şöyledir: 1) M. Aelius Fronto Paulus (corrigendum), 2) Aristeides, agoranomos (corrigendum), 3) Artemidoros, agoranomos (corrigendum et addendum), 4) Aurelius Iulianus Stratoneikos, 5) Tib. Iulius Gamikos (corrigendum), 6) Claudius (?) Pothumenos, agoranomos, 7) T. Sextilius Tertullianus (addendum), 8) –nus Virius Cassius, agoranomos (corrigendum), 9) Plautus, agoranomos (addendum) (1), 10) Plautus, (corrigendum) (2).

This article presents ten lead balance weights from Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation Anatolian Weights and Measures Collection at the Pera Museum. Oğuz Tekin previously published these weights in the catalog as part of the Corpus Ponderum Antiquorum et Islamicorum (CPAI) project, which documents the balance weights in museum collections in Türkiye. In the catalog, O. Tekin left the epigraphic autopsy and possible solutions for the marketplace officials mentioned on the weights for further research. This article reviews some of the inscriptions on these weights and provides addenda and corrigenda to them. The findings presented here significantly improve our comprehension of the names of the marketplace officials on the balance weights originating from ‘Western Asia Minor’. The names of these new marketplace officials are as follows: 1) M. Aelius Fronto Paulus (corrigendum), 2) Aristeides, agoranomos (corrigendum), 3) Artemidoros, agoranomos (corrigendum et addendum), 4) Aurelius Iulianus Stratoneikos, 5) Tib. Iulius Gamikos (corrigendum), 6) Claudius (?) Pothumenos, agoranomos, 7) T. Sextilius Tertullianus (addendum), 8) –nus Virius Cassius, agoranomos (corrigendum), 9) Plautus, agoranomos (addendum) (1), 10) Plautus, (corrigendum) (2).
