Abstract

This paper aims to present the importance of mercury or quicksilver in Spanish American mining through a historical journey that points out the establishment of the mercury amalgamation method in Spanish American mining centers as widespread during the colonial period. We will make a brief tour of the so-called “patio method” and the variations in the process of amalgamation of silver and gold, we will stop at the mercury mines as sources of supply and in the distribution of this input through the royal coffers. Special attention will be given to the case of Oruro. Finally, we will approach the problems caused by the consumption of mercury, which were known since the 16th century.
