Abstract

Abstract - The protozoan parasites Giardia spp. and Cryptosporidium spp. are responsible for numerous waterborne diarrheal outbreaks around the world. In the state of Santa Catarina, there are few studies that evaluate and relate the presence of these protozoa in river and marine samples and their importance in health. The research aimed to investigate the presence of Giardia spp. cysts. and oocysts of Cryptosporidium spp. in sea and river water samples in the city of Itapema, located on the north coast of the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. For six months, 10 L of water were collected monthly from each of the points and subjected to membrane filtration techniques, Direct Immunofluorescence Reaction and visualization of the structures of interest under an epifluorescence microscope. Cryptosporidium spp. presented a frequency of 33.3% and 83.33% in river and sea waters respectively. Giardia spp. showed positivity of 33.3% in river water alone. This is the first report of the occurrence of Giardia spp cysts. and oocysts of Cryptosporidium spp. on the Perequê River and on the beach in the city of Itapema, SC. The presence of these protozoa in water matrices highlights the need to expand sewage collection and treatment in the region.
