Abstract

A diabetes mellitus (DM) é um dos grandes desafios de saúde pública no Brasil em virtude do aumento do número de pessoas diagnosticadas. Esta doença caracteriza-se como um complexo conjunto de distúrbios metabólicos que têm em comum a hiperglicemia causada por defeitos na ação e/ou na secreção de insulina. A planta medicinal pata-de-vaca é frequentemente usada no tratamento do diabetes mellitus devido às suas propriedades hipoglicemiantes. Diante do exposto, o presente trabalho investigou o que há de produção científica que confirme o efeito hipoglicemiante da planta pata-de-vaca. O estudo trata-se de revisão da literatura de caráter descritivo e abordagem qualitativa. Foi realizada uma busca nas bases de dados Scientific Eletronic Library Online (SCIELO), LILACS e PubMed por estudos publicados entre o período de 2016 a 2023. Os artigos usados para o desenvolvimento do trabalho mostraram que o uso de plantas medicinais pata-de-vaca se destaca no tratamento do diabetes mellitus. A pata-de-vaca demonstrou eficácia no tratamento da DM do tipo 2, com efeitos notáveis, como ação hipoglicemiante, redução da hemoglobina glicada e parâmetros inflamatórios. Seu uso está ligado à sua ampla variedade de componentes químicos como flavonoides, canferitrina e canferol presentes em sua composição química distribuídos de maneira variável em diferentes partes da planta. Entretanto, ainda são necessárias mais pesquisas que busquem garantir e certificar a eficácia do uso da pata-de-vaca e quais as possíveis reações adversas ocasionadas pelo seu uso, de modo que, o conhecimento a respeito dessas possíveis reações indesejadas, sejam esclarecidas aos usuários.
