Abstract

Cattle femur from the wreck of the Earl of Abergavenny. ID: EOA:2022.90 Collection: Earl of Abergavenny Classification: Remains Measurements: Length 170mm Width 150mm Date made: as yet unknown Display: not on display Manufacturer/Creator: as yet unknown Credit: Portland Museum Trust Cattle femur with evidence of butchery. The Earl Of Abergavenny carried livestock on board to feed high ranking crew and passengers. Barrels of salted beef and pork would have formed the rations for the lower ranking crew and passengers. The livestock were kept on the poop deck of the ship leading to a description of East Indiamen as 'floating farmyards'. Sheep, chicken, cattle, pig & turkey remains have been found on the wreck.
