Abstract

Fue ordenada edificar por Alfonso II el Casto entre los años 812 y 842, en un conjunto suburbano que, se cree, incluía también un palacio, termas y otras dependencias. Es también el único edificio que nos ha llegado en buen estado de conservación de los muchos que Alfonso II levantó en Oviedo, al hacer allí su capital. San Julián es el mayor de los templos prerrománicos asturianos, de planta basilical con transepto, único en Asturias, siendo también original en su arquitectura. Presenta tres naves cortas y anchas, separadas por arcos de medio punto sobre pilares, delimitados por un arco toral que remarca el ingreso a na nace transversal. Ese transepto continuo, inscrito en la planta del edificio, precede a la cabecera, que está provista de tres capillas abovedadas sin comunicación interna que, al exterior, se alojan en un muro testero recto, que es el modelo presente.
