
En 1968, siguiendo la sugerencia de Manuel Chávez Ballón, John Howland Rowe (1967) publicó la afirmación de que el Cusco inca fue planificada de acuerdo al perfil de un puma, propuesta sustentada por los comentarios de dos cronistas españoles principales, Juan de Betanzos (1987 [ 1551]) y Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa (1960 [1572]), así como por los nombres asignados a porciones de Cusco por Betanzos (1987: cap.
