Abstract

Genus Canadaphis Essig, 1937 Canadaphis carpenteri Essig, 193 7 Material. Carpenter collection no. 6058. Apterous morph, sexual female. Diagnosis. Antenna six segmented without secondary rhinaria. Abdomen much narrower in apical part, finger-shaped and blunt. Description. Body elliptical in outline, 1.00 long, at the broadest point 0.42 wide. Head large (0.17 long and 0.18 wide between compound eyes), clearly distinguishable from thorax. Prothorax in form of a trapezoid plate 4x as wide as long. Abdominal tergites clearly delineated. Abdomen distinctly narrows from 2/3 of its length, with a finger-like apex. Head triangular in shape, with a rounded, convex apex, posterior margin slightly concave. Bases of 6-segmented, slender antennae lying halfway along head length (I-0.04, II-0.03–0.04, III-0.08–0.09, IV-0.08, V-0.09–0.10, VI-0.10–0.11, VIa-0.07, VIb-0.03–0.04) (Fig. 2a, b). Antennae with no setae. Circular rhinaria on segment V apically (diameter 0.01–0.02) and at base of terminal process on segment VI (diameter 0.01). Paired ocelli located at the bases of antennae at the level of their anterior margin. Large compound eyes (length 0.08, width 0.03) with large, loosely clustered ommatidia reaching posterior head margin, lying below antennal bases on sides of the head. Large ocular tubercle (triommatidium) placed behind the eyes. Rostrum thick/stout, reaching hind coxa. Rostral segment III as long as wide (length-0.04, width-0.04), segment IV (length-0.08, width at base-0.03), tapered, with no setae (Fig. 2c). Legs quite short: fore: femur 0.19, tibia 0.22, tarsal segment I 0.01, segment II 0.08; middle: femur 0.24, tibia, tarsal segment I 0.01, segment II 0.05; hind: femur 0.25, tibia 0.34, tarsal segment I 0.02, segment II 0.11. Hind tibia with numerous pale plaques without distinct rims (Fig. 2d). Abdomen consisting of three parts. Anterior part is oval in shape, broadly connected with thorax. Last segment of this part with porous siphons. In the centre of the sclerite (diameter 0.05–0.06) a porous hole (diameter 0.02). Middle part, consisting of 1–2 segments, forms a transitional zone to slender, posterior part. Posterior pair dorsally with a finger-shaped cauda (length 0.1, maximum width 0.06); base of cauda narrowed (Fig. 2e). Ventral part of the body, below cauda, consisting of a long (0.16) and wide (0.13), anal plate, which is rounded apically (Fig. 2f). Ventrally, the plate is covered with short (0.01), stout bristles.
