Sarcófago de Astorga

Abstract

Sarcófago importado de Roma, fabricado en mármol proconeso según los datos arqueométricos. Encontrado en la catedral de Astorga, actualmente se encuentra en el Museo Arqueológico Nacional. Sólamente el frente del sarcófago se encuentra esculpido, con una sucesión de escenas cristianas. De izquierda a derecha encontramos la resurrección de Lázaro, con su hermana María arrodillada delante del sepulcro; el arresto de San Pedro, figura central entre dos legionarios romanos; el milagro de la roca, por el que San Pedro en prisión hace manar agua, bautizando a dos soldados, arrodillados a sus pies; el Pecado Original con Adán y Eva; el milagro de Multiplicación de los panes y los peces; y el sacrificio de Isaac, en donde se ve la mano de Dios en la parte superior del relieve y a Isaac arrodillado a la derecha. La pieza es particularmente interesante porque está fechado entre los años 305-315 d.C., siendo, por lo tanto, anterior al Edicto de Milán, en el que se establecía la libertad religiosa en el Imperio.
