Abstract

Masque *Ngil*. Ces masques étaient utilisés par la société masculine Ngil, à la fois dans les rituels d'initiation et pour lutter contre les sorciers et les malfaiteurs. Les masques, réalisés par sculpture et pyrogravure à partir d'un morceau de bois, se caractérisent par des formes allongées. La tradition a été abandonnée en raison du manque de connaissances concernant ces masques. Les motifs pyrogravés sur les joues, typiques des masques Fang du sud, représentent des tatouages enregistrés par Günter Tessman parmi des populations Fang telles que les Mvai et Nutmu du Gabon et de la Guinée équatoriale. D'autre part, la peinture blanche (kaolin) du visage fait référence à la mort, allusion aux ancêtres, incarnation de l'esprit d'une personne décédée (Hahner-Herzog et al 1997). Hahner,Herzog, I.
