Abstract

Verkefnið þróun smáþörungafóðurs fyrir fiskeldi sem var samstafsverkefni VAXA og Matís og styrkt til tveggja ára af Tækniþróunarsjóð er nú lokið. Verkefnið hafði að markmiði að þróa afurðir VAXA sem innihaldsefni fyrir fiskafóður í fiskeldi. Framkvæmdar voru nokkrar tilraunir sem höfðu að markmiði að skoða notagildi Nannochloropsis smáþörungsins sem innihaldsefni í fiskafóður. Í þessum tilraunum var skoðað 1. Geymsluþol ferskra þörunga, 2. Hvernig megi veikja frumuvegg þörungsins svo hann verði meltanlegur fyrir fiska en annars er hann ómeltanlegur, 3. Áhrif fiskafóðurs með þörungaolíu á vöxt og laxalúsasmit á laxaseiðum, 4. Vöxt og upptöku á fitusýrum og Omega 3 í laxaseiðum sem eru fóðruð á fóðri með þörungaolíu. 5. Reiknivél fyrir upptöku Omega 3 í laxaseiði. Niðurstöður tilraunanna voru að mörgu leiti jákvæðar og bættu mjög þekkingu VAXA á möguleikunum að nota Nannochloropsis þöringinn eða afurðir unnar úr honum eins og þörungaolíu í fiskafóður. Sú þekking sem ávannst í verkefninu nýtist VAXA til þess að þróa afurðir sínar til notkunar í laxafóður. Þótt svo að Omega 3 fitusýrur séu til staðar í ýmsum matvælum (aðalega fiski), er lax talinn ein besta uppspretta þessara fistusýra. Fiskeldisiðanaðurinn hefur leitað leiða til þess að minnka notkun sína á fiskmjöli og fisk olíu fyrir laxafóður, sem hefur valdið því að Omega 3 magn í eldislaxi hefur minnkað. Í þessu rannsóknarverkefni hefur í fyrsta skipti verið notað með góðum árangri sjálbærir ljóstilífandi þörungar til framleiðslu á Omega 3 fyrir laxafóður. Niðurstöður verkefnisins sýna fram á hagkvæmni þessarar nálgunar fyrir framleiðslu á Omega 3 ríku laxafóðri. Góðar niðurstöður verkefnisins munu hjálpa VAXA að markaðsetja þörungaolíu úr framleiðslu sinni sem valskost fyrir Omega 3 ríkt innihaldsefni fyrir laxafóður í stað fiskimjöls og fiskolíu í laxafóður framtíðarinnar.
