The bufflehead (Bucephala albeola) is a species of birds breeding in Alaska and Canada, whose occurrence range has recently moved southwards to the states of Dakota and Minnesota. It winters in the area stretching from southern Alaska, the Great Lakes and Nova Scotia, to northern Mexico. In Europe, isolated specimens of the species are sporadically reported. In Poland, until 2009, the presence of the bufflehead was reported 3 times (Wielkopolskie [Greater Poland] and Lower Silesia Provinces), but it is not certain whether these were natural occurrences, because this species is a commonly kept in aviculture as an ornamental bird. In Europe, several occurrences in Iceland, Great Britain and Ireland are considered natural. The presented bird was found in the village of Trzciana on 15 March 1885 by Antoni Kocyan.
