The "EOLSHIPS" data set is a comprehensive collection of data that provides information on end-of-life ships from the years 2017 to 2022. The data set includes key variables such as ship IMO number, name, type, dimensions, beneficial owner country, breaking flag, previous flag, as well as the year and country of breaking. The data has been collected from various publicly available sources, including the NGO Shipbreaking Platform, as well as the websites https://www.marinetraffic.com and https://www.fleetmon.com. This data set serves as a valuable resource for researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders interested in understanding global ship recycling practices. It has been used in conjunction with other research efforts and is associated with the article titled "Ship recycling—estimating future stocks and readiness for green steel transformation," which can be found at DOI 10.1088/1748-9326/ad0a55. This publication highlights the importance of understanding ship recycling practices and their implications for sustainable steel production. By utilizing this data set, researchers can gain a deeper understanding of global ship recycling trends and contribute to informed decision-making processes regarding sustainable practices in the maritime industry.
We would like to acknowledge the NGO Shipbreaking Platform for their valuable contribution to this data set. Parts of the data have been adapted from the annual lists provided by the NGO Shipbreaking Platform. The lists were downloaded from their website at https://shipbreakingplatform.org/annual-lists/ on May 9, 2023. We are grateful for their efforts in collecting and sharing this information, which has greatly enhanced the comprehensiveness and accuracy of our data set.
