La dulce amenaza para los bosques de manglar

Abstract

Los bosques de manglar, conocidos también como bosques salados, son ecosistemas de vital importancia a nivel mundial, y se encuentran entre los más amenazados. En El Salvador se ha perdido aproximadamente el 60% de la cobertura de manglar desde la década de 1950, con la expansión de las áreas de cultivo de caña de azúcar. El cambio de uso del suelo para la producción de sal, la tala furtiva, el cultivo de camarón marino y de caña de azúcar, son los principales factores que en la actualidad causan presión sobre los manglares. El uso de agroquímicos y la quema del rastrojo, junto con los altos volúmenes de agua necesarios para el riego, contribuyen también a la degradación de los manglares. En esta nota explicamos las graves consecuencias del estrés hídrico al que se ven sometidos los bosques de manglar y también se revisa la legislación que debería de ocuparse para proporcionar un lugar privilegiado como usuario del recurso hídrico a este importante ecosistema.
