Impressões sobre o Congresso de Milão

Abstract

Trata-se de tradução de texto inédito no Brasil publicado originalmente em 1881. James Denison, autor do texto, foi um dos quatro surdos presentes no Congresso para melhoria da condição dos surdos-mudos, realizado em Milão, de 06 a 11 de setembro de 1880. Na história da educação de surdos o evento italiano goza de muita popularidade, mas pouco aprofundamento e, repetidamente, é apresentado como evento em que se deu a extinção da língua de sinais. O texto de James Denison permite-nos uma visão ímpar sobre o evento, ultrapassando os limites das narrativas tradicionais que projetam sobre Milão apenas a oposição língua de sinais versus oralização. A tradução deste texto para o público brasileiro possibilita problematizar muitas verdades acerca de Milão.
