
Listening to Scents (Ting Xiang) is one of the scenic spots in Lion Grove Garden which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. In this scenic spot, there are some scent plants in the courtyard such as peonies and magnolias. The theme of this scenic spot Listening to Scents (Ting Xiang) is carved on a brick wall. As well known, scents should be smelled by the nose but not listened to by hears. However, if we go through Chinese gardening history, we can find lots of other scenic spots taking the same name. Through literature review and fieldwork, firstly, this paper shows scenic spots in Chinese classical gardens in different periods. Secondly, the philosophical foundation of Listening to Scents is revealed. Finally, the values awareness of Listening to Scents in Chinese garden heritage is exported. This paper argues that Listening to Scents is a significant olfactory aesthetic concept in ancient Chinese culture which is produced under the aesthetic idea-chaos (Hun dun). In addition, the mechanism of Listening to Scents is transcending physical sensory perception and logical thinking. Listening to Scents suggests people break physical feelings and rationalism spontaneously, return to their true selves, and combine themselves with scents, in this way to realize the nature and true meaning of life.
