Abstract: The benefits of scientific collaboration through co-authorship are widely recognized, which has driven a growing trend in the number of authors per document. However, the increase in collaboration has been accompanied by a set of research misconduct, where individuals included as authors in a publication do not actually meet the required criteria for authorship. This article details the criteria that every person must meet to be considered an author of a publication according to the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors. It is the responsibility of the authors, and not the editors of the journal to which the document is submitted, to determine and verify that all persons named as authors meet the four criteria. Finally, the question of whether technology assisted by artificial intelligence (AI) can be considered the author is addressed.
