Abstract

Com o intuito de transformar o etanol em uma alternativa para suprir a atual demanda global por combustíveis, as técnicas para transformar a biomassa lignocelulósica em açúcares fermentáveis entraram em foco, permitindo a produção desse composto de forma eficiente. O artigo de referência avaliou o potencial dos resíduos agrícolas brasileiros como fonte de biomassa para produzir etanol de segunda geração. O estudo demonstrou que a palha de arroz e a palha de cana-de-açúcar apresentam alta conversão de celulose em etanol, em torno de 80% e 85-89%, respectivamente, enquanto as outras espécies de resíduos agrícolas apresentam conversão em torno de 60%. Todos os rejeitos têm o potencial para uma produção de bioetanol na ordem de bilhões de litros por ano.
