Data for: Biological Flora of Britain and Ireland: Silene uniflora

Abstract

# Data for: Biological Flora of Britain & Ireland: Silene uniflora [https://doi.org/10.5061/dryad.b8gtht7mk](https://doi.org/10.5061/dryad.b8gtht7mk) Germination tests carried out on seed of *Silene uniflora* after 6 months’ dry storage at room temperature. The tests were carried out on filter paper in five replicate Petri dishes (sealed with Parafilm), with 20 seeds per replicate dish. Dishes were kept in incubators with illumination from warm-white fluorescent tubes for 12h/day and monitored for up to 47 days. The response to temperature was tested at 5, 10, 15 and 20 °C. The response to salinity (0, 50, 100 and 200 mM NaCl ) was tested at 15 and 20°C. The data are presented as a single Excel spreadsheet book. Sheet 1 is an explanation, sheet 2 contains the temperature response data, sheet 3 contains the salinity response at 15°C data, and sheet 4 contains salinity response at 20°C data. The columns represent cumulative numbers of germinated seeds in treatments (grouped by their replicates). The rows represent days from the start of the experiment. All have descriptive headings/labels. This work was carried out in support of a review of this species in the series *Biological Flora of Britain and Ireland*. It might be used for making comparisons of germination biology with other species, particularly maritime ones.

The data comprise the results of a series of tests carried out on filter paper in five replicate Petri dishes (sealed with Parafilm), with 20 seeds per replicate dish. Dishes were kept in incubators with illumination from warm-white fluorescent tubes for 12h/day and monitored for up to 47 days. The germination tests examined responses to a range of constant temperatures (5, 10, 15 and 20 °C) and salinities (0, 50, 100 and 200 mM NaCl). These are raw data and have not been processed. They are presented as an Excel spreadsheet.

These data result from an investigation of the germination biology of seeds of Silene uniflora (Sea Campion) in response to temperature and salinity. They are summarised in Figure 7 and interpreted in section 8.4 of the account of Silene uniflora in the series Biological Flora of Britain and Ireland, published in the Journal of Ecology.
