On the generic assignment of the taxa placed in the Oriental footman-moth genus Teulisna with the description of three new genera, one subgenus and eighteen new species

Abstract

The generic assignment of the taxa placed in the Oriental footman-moth genus Teulisna Walker, 1862 is revised. Three new genera are erected: Tufteulisna gen. n. (Type species: Teulisna pendleburyi Holloway, 1982), Sundabitecta gen. n. (Type species: Bitecta fasciata Gaede, 1925), and Fangeulisna gen. n. (Type species: Teulisna maculata Fang, 2000). One genus-group name previously considered as a junior synonym of Teulisna is restored to genus level: Bitecta Heylaerts, 1891, stat. rev. The genus Teulisna is subdivided into four subgenera, one of which is described as new and reviewed: Teulisna sensu stricto, Teulisna subgenus Cossa Walker, [1865], stat. rev., Teulisna subgenus Tegulata Walker, 1862, stat. rev., Teulisna subgenus Poikilothosia Volynkin, Černý & Huang, subgen. n. (Type species: Teulisna ganesha Volynkin, 2023). Eighteen new species of Teulisna (Poikilothosia) subgen. n. are described: T. (P.) distributa Volynkin, Černý & Huang, sp. n., T. (P.) tubularis Volynkin, Černý & Huang, sp. n., T. (P.) inthanona Volynkin, Černý & Huang, sp. n., T. (P.) sayinyingpo Huang, Volynkin & Černý, sp. n., T. (P.) subtilis Volynkin, Černý & Huang, sp. n., T. (P.) khasiana Volynkin, Černý & Huang, sp. n., T. (P.) taidona Volynkin, Černý & Huang, sp. n., T. (P.) bucseki Volynkin, Černý & Huang, sp. n., T. (P.) omeiana Volynkin, Černý & Huang, sp. n., T. (P.) pilcheri Volynkin, Černý & Huang, sp. n., T. (P.) variabilis Volynkin, Černý & Huang, sp. n., T. (P.) robusta Volynkin, Černý & Huang, sp. n., T. (P.) brevis Volynkin, Černý & Huang, sp. n., T. (P.) swanni Volynkin, Černý & Huang, sp. n., T. (P.) differens Volynkin, Černý & Huang, sp. n., T. (P.) spatula Volynkin, Černý & Huang, sp. n., T. (P.) mingchyra Volynkin, Černý & Huang, sp. n., and T. (P.) plica Volynkin, Černý & Huang, sp. n. Nineteen new combinations are established: Plumareola nigrisquama (Bucsek, 2012), comb. n., Bitecta diastropha (Rothschild, 1920), comb. n., Bitecta macropallida (Holloway, 2001), comb. n., Bitecta murina (Heylaerts, 1891), comb. n., Bitecta nigricauda (Holloway, 1982), comb. n., Bitecta pallidicauda (Holloway, 2001), comb. n., Bitecta uniformis (Hampson, 1894), comb. n., Bitecta vestigiata (Černý, 1995), comb. n., Sundabitecta fasciata (Gaede, 1925), comb. n., Fangeulisna maculata (Fang, 2000), comb. n., Teulisna tricolor (Wileman, 1911), comb. n., Teulisna aurantiotestacea (Rothschild, 1912), comb. n., Teulisna lutescens (Rothschild, 1912), comb. n., Teulisna tjibodas (Schaus, 1922), comb. n., Mithuna tongdzuythanhi (Dubatolov & Bucsek, 2016), comb. n., Mithuna flava (Dubatolov & Bucsek, 2016), comb. n., Mithuna varia (Bucsek, 2020), comb. n., Mithuna mithunoides (Černý, 2009), comb. n., and Mithuna tenebrosus (N. Singh & Kirti, 2016), comb. n. Five new synonymies are introduced: Bitecta Heylaerts, 1891, stat. rev. = Lophoneura Hampson, 1894, syn. n.; Teulisna (Tegulata) Walker, 1862, stat. rev. = Corcura Walker, 1862, syn. n.; Teulisna (Tegulata) Walker, 1862, stat. rev. = Ityca Walker, 1866, syn. n.; Teulisna (Tegulata) Walker, 1862, stat. rev. = Diastrophia C. & R. Felder, 1874, syn. n.; Sundabitecta fasciata (Gaede, 1925), comb. n. = Teulisna harmani Holloway, 2001, syn. n. Lectotypes are designated for Teulisna obliquistria Hampson, 1894 and Tegulata protuberans Moore, 1878. A neotype is designated for Cossa pallida Moore, 1878. Check-lists of the genera and subgenera are provided. Adults and male and female genitalia are illustrated.
