Abstract

Le XVIIIe siècle est celui d’une évolution manifeste de la perception de l’auteur, qui devient une personnalité, un objet d’admiration, de curiosité, voire de répulsion. Au succès des œuvres littéraires elles-mêmes se lie la multiplication des représentations de l’auteur, devenu le sujet d’anecdotes qui circulent par voie de presse, et dont l’image se diffuse par le portrait, ses reproductions et ses déclinaisons. Le présent article entend s’attacher aux rapports entre le portrait d’auteur et la notion de célébrité littéraire au XVIIIe siècle à travers deux trajectoires diamétralement opposées : celle de l’écrivain Laurence Sterne et celle du philosophe Bernard Mandeville.
