First cases of abnormalities in the fish genus Notacanthus (Notacanthiformes: Notacanthidae)

Abstract

[EN] Two cases of abnormalities in the genus Notacanthus (Notacanthiformes: Notacanthidae) from the northeast Atlantic are described for the first time. A specimen of Notacanthus arrontei from Galician waters (northwest Spain) has an anal fin lacking a spiny section, replaced by a double row of soft filaments and a specimen of Notacanthus bonaparte from Porcupine Bank (west Ireland) has two cloacal openings derived from an intestinal terminal bifurcation.

The authors would like to thank the staff involved in the scientific surveys BANGAL 0810 and PORCUPINE 2020 carried out by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO, CSIC) on board the R/V Thalassa and R/V Vizconde de Eza (Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Spain). The authors thank two anonymous reviewers for their useful comments.
