Abstract

Artykuł prezentuje poglądy Benedykta Chmielowskiego, barokowego encyklopedysty i uczonego zainteresowanego etymologią, na tle dyskusji o relacji między językiem łacińskim a polskim w XVII i XVIII w. Chmielowski był zdecydowanym przeciwnikiem puryzmu językowego, miłośnikiem starożytności, zwolennikiem latynizmów jako niezbędnego elementu terminologii naukowej i popularyzatorem wiedzy, który makaronizmy stosował w celach erudycyjnych i ludycznych.
