A catalogue of Noctuidae Latreille, 1809 (Lepidoptera: Noctuoidea) from India

Abstract

This study aims to present a comprehensive catalogue of Noctuidae sensu stricto reported from India, based on an extensive review of the literature and other secondary sources. We document 1,219 valid species belonging to 314 genera across 21 subfamilies (including 2 genera and 4 species unassigned to any subfamily) of Noctuidae from India, representing nearly 10% of the described global noctuid species richness. We provide a referenced systematic account that includes synonymies, distributions in India and elsewhere, and remarks on subspecies, where applicable. Among the subfamilies, Noctuinae is the most well-represented in India, with 718 species in 171 genera, and account for more than 50% of Indian noctuid diversity. Eustrotiinae follows with 89 species in 14 genera, then Plusiinae with 67 species in 26 genera, Acontiinae with 41 species in 18 genera, and Heliothinae with 38 species in 7 genera. Mythimna Ochsenheimer is the most species-rich noctuid genus in India, with 72 species, followed by Athetis Hübner (34 species), Ozarba Walker and Maliattha Walker (25 species each), Callopistria Hübner (24 species), Hermonassa Walker (23 species), and Timora Walker and Xestia Hübner (22 species each). Among the ten biogeographic zones recognized in India, the Himalaya is the most species-rich, comprising nearly 70% of the fauna, followed by North East, Western Ghats, and the Deccan Peninsula. The Indian Himalayan states of Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, northern West Bengal (Himalayan districts), and Uttarakhand support the most species. Zoogeographically, nearly 62% of Indian noctuids exhibit Indomalayan affinities, while about 30% show Palaearctic affinities. The Trans Himalaya, North East and the Himalaya reflect the greatest percentages of unique occurrences.
