New records of Pucciniales and Urocystidales (Basidiomycota) on Hypoxis decumbens from Colombia

Abstract

Plants of Hypoxis decumbens showing signs and symptoms of rust and smut fungi were collected in the municipalities of Medellín (rust fungi) and Santo Domingo (smut fungi), located in the Department of Antioquia, Colombia. The morphology and molecular sequencing of the rust and smut fungi allowed for description of a new rust species: Puccinia neohypoxidis Galvis-López, Morales-Osorio & Salazar, on H. decumbens. In addition, the smut fungus Urocystis hypoxidis parasitizing the native plant H. decumbens, is reported for the first time in Colombia. The importance of these results in a mega-biodiverse country such as Colombia is discussed.
