Abstract

Die Untersuchung der Kristallstruktur mit Hilfe der Rontgenstrahlen hat zu dem Resultate gefuhrt, das eine relativ kleine Zahl von verschiedenen Gittertypen bei den einfachen chemischen Substanzen vorzuherrschen scheint. Insbesondere kehrt das bekannte Gitter des Steinsalzes (Na Cl) bei allen binaren Halogensalzen wieder und wird auch noch auserhalb dieser Gruppe von Verbindungen (z. B. beim Bleiglanz PbS, beim Periklas MgO) angetroffen. Es ist daher zu vermuten, das dieses Gitter durch irgendwelche geometrischen oder dynamischen Eigenschaften ausgezeichnet sein wird. Es besteht aus zwei ineinandergestellten, flachenzentrierten kubischen Gittern, deren jedes aus Atomen einer Art gebildet ist. Das haufige Vorkommen solcher flachenzentrierter, kubischer Gitter (auch bei einatomigen Kristallen, z. B. denen vieler Metalle) hangt offenbar damit zusammen, das diese Gitter dichtesten Kugelpackungen entsprechen und daher ein Minimum der Kohasionsenergie fur kugelsymmetrische Atome ergeben. Doch erklart diese geometrische Tatsache nicht ohne weiteres die Haufigkeit der aus zwei Atomsorten gebildeten Gitter vom Steiusalztypus; vielmehr ist dazu ein genaueres Eingehen auf die Natur der Kohasionskrafte erforderlich. Das ist in diesem Falle moglich, weil es als sicher gelten kann, das die Kohasionskrafte in uberwiegendem Mase rein elektrostatischer Natur sind.
