Abstract

Ebenso wie die anderen mehrwertigen Alkohole wird der Xylit von Brom und Soda zu einer Pentose oxydiert, und letztere kann leicht in Form ihres Phenylosazons isoliert werden. Dieses Produkt ist aber nicht identisch mit dem Osazon der naturlichen Xylose; es unterscheidet sich davon nicht allein durch den viel hoheren Schmelzpunkt und die geringere Loslichkeit, sondern auch durch die optische Inaktivitat. Dieses Resultat war vorauszusehen, denn der Xylit selbst ist durch intramolekulare Kompensation inaktiv und wird mithin bei der Oxydation ein Gemisch der beiden optisch entgegengesetzten Pentosen liefern mussen. Da es ferner fur die Osazonbildung gleichgultig ist, ob man eine Aldose oder Ketose verwendet, so halte ich die obige Verbindung, welche in ihrem gesamten Charakter den Osazonen der gewohnlichen Zucker durchaus entspricht, fur die racemische Form des Xylosazons. Die Verbindung ist besonders deshalb beachtenswert, weil sie mit dem Glucosazon verwechselt werden kann.
