Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication is now the most common operative procedure for treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease, although longterm clinical outcomes after this procedure remain uncertain. The procedure involves wrapping the upper portion of the stomach around the lower portion of the esophagus to prevent stomach acid from flowing back up into the esophagus. This can help alleviate symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease, such as heartburn and regurgitation. However, the long-term effectiveness of this procedure is still being studied, and more research is needed to fully understand its benefits and risks.
