Small pelagics are the main fish resource in North West Africa. In Senegal, these are mainly sardinellas (Sardinella aurita and S. maderensis) and bonga shad (Ethmalosa fimbriata). The fisheries, mainly artisanal, are a key source of income for many communities. The profitability of these fisheries is influenced by various factors, including the abundance of fish, the efficiency of fishing gear, and the market demand for the catch. Understanding these drivers is crucial for the sustainable management of small pelagic fisheries and the improvement of the livelihoods of fishers and their communities.
