Abstract

The rhinoceros of the inferior villafranchian site of Vialette (Haute-Loire, France) has been known for a long time but attributed first to the villafranchian D. etruscus, then to a progressive form of the pliocene D. megarhinus. In fact it constitutes a particular species D. jeanvireti nov. sp. This species, whose paleoecology we have determined, is typical of the lower Villafranchian, and is also found in other european sites such as Perrier-Etouaires (France), Villafranca d'Asti (Italy), Hajnacka (Tchecoslovakia) and in some roumanian localities. In several of these sites the species is associated with D. etruscus.
