Abstract

Il pomeriggio dell’8 agosto 1897 il Primo ministro spagnolo Antonio Cánovas del Castillo fu colpito da quattro pistolettate quasi a bruciapelo, mentre si trovava alle terme di Santa Agueda, nei Pirenei occidentali. Cánovas, ferito a morte, spirò dopo un’ora. L’assassino era Michele Angiolillo, un giovane anarchico italiano, che affermò che l’attentato era un atto di vendetta per la tortura e l’esecuzione di cinque anarchici nella celebre prigione di Montjuich a Barcellona. Ma chi era in realtà Angilillo? Aveva agito da solo, o era parte di una più vasta congiura diretta dal movimento anarchico internazionale, o dalla delegazione cubana a Parigi, diretta da Ramó Emeterio Betances? Ancora oggi, a quasi un secolo dall’omicidio, le cose non sono state studiate a fondo, e ogni probabilità di chiarirle è svanita col passare del tempo. Questo saggio cerca di rispondere a tutte queste controverse e irrisolte questioni, analizzando i lunghi viaggi di Angiolillo in diversi Paesi europei, i suoi rapporti personali con molti dirigenti anarchici e sostenitori dell’indipendenza di Cuba, e concentrandosi sui presunti effetti dell’improvvisa scomparsa di Cánovas sull’ormai agonizzante impero spagnolo, sull’orlo della crisi finale del 1898.
