La storiografia siceliota ha individuato nei Cartaginesi il "materiale" identitario con cui plasmare la figura del nemico per eccellenza, portatore di una violenza irriducibile a qualsiasi "domesticazione". Si prendono qui in esame due racconti esemplari, anche per le loro interrelazioni strutturali: le narrazioni che Diodoro ci trasmette degli assedi di Selinunte (409 a.C.) e Mozia (397 a.C.).
