Abstract

Abstract: This work involved the chemical composition study of the volatile fraction (essential oils and headspaces) of Hedychium coronarium and Pimenta pseudocaryophyllus using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The most abundant constituent present in P. pseudocayophyllus leaf, chavibetol, was isolated using preparative thin layer and countercurrent chromatographies and characterized by mass spectrometry and NMR and infrared spectroscopy. A seasonal study of H. coronarium was conducted using four different samples collected during the year 2008. The antimicrobial activities of the oils of H. coronarium rhizome and P. pseudocayophyllus leaf, chavibetol, methyleugenol and eugenol were evaluated using the diffusion technique with discs and microdilution broth technique
