Between industry and life in the sugar mill: an analysis of change in work in the sugarcane "zone" of Pernambuco

Abstract

O presente artigo é fruto da pesquisa do mestrado em Ciências Sociais na Universidade Federal de Campina Grande, realizada nos anos de 2011 a 2013, e analisa os processos pelos quais as condições de existência no espaço rural do Engenho Megaípe, localizado no município de Jaboatão dos Guararapes- PE, têm se metamorfoseado diante das dinâmicas econômicas em curso na “zona” da cana-de-açúcar, que é impulsionada, principalmente, pela industrialização e logística, a qual tem como símbolo o Porto de Suape. A ideia central deste trabalho é mostrar quais são as principais estratégias produtivas que possibilitam a reprodução social dessas famílias que vivem no engenho, evidenciando, sobretudo, como elas percebem essas novas formas de trabalho. Dentre os resultados da pesquisa, destacam-se: a busca pelo trabalho nas indústrias como um projeto de vida das famílias do engenho; a manutenção nos engenhos de atividades agrícolas de subsistência; e a insegurança das famílias em perder suas moradias no engenho diante das transformações que ocorrem na região.

The this Article is fruit of the masters in Social Sciences in University Federal of Campina Grande between year 2011-2013, and analyzes the processes by which the conditions of existence in space rural the Megaípe Sugar Mill, located in municipality of Jaboatão dos Guararapes-PE, has morphed face of the economic dynamics under way in the "zone" of cane sugar, which is mainly driven by industrialization and logistics, which is symbolized by the Port of Suape. The central idea of this work is to show what are the main productive strategies that enable the social reproduction of these families that living on the sugar mill, showing, especially, how they perceive these new ways of working. Among search results, stand out: the search by work in industries as a project of life of families the sugar mill; the maintenance in the sugar mill of activities agricultural of subsistence; and insecurity of families in lost their townhouses in engenho forth of the transformations that occurring in the region.
