The aim of the paper is to see how powerful the letter could be in its literality. Reading The Scarlet Letter, we explore the process how the letter of the law is converted into the law of the letter, that is literality. We will focus on the power of the letter and see how a writing symbol functions as the law and how its literality works. Second, we will see how the law of the letter is realized in the form of the epistle, how the letter A can function like an epistle: "A" is for Address/Addressing. Finally the subversive power of literality is examined as to the last chapter of the novel.
