Abstract The suggestion that Li was substituted for Cu in the Li-doped Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O system was examined by growth process observation and by preparation of 2212-phase single crystals. Among four starting materials with different Cu and Li content, 2212-phase crystals were only observed from the sample with cation ratio Bi:Sr:Ca:Cu: Li = 2.2:1.8:1.0:1.2:0.8. Evidence is presented that in single crystals of 2212 structure with measured cation ratio Bi:Sr:Ca:Cu:Li = 2.6:1.6:1.0:1.2:0.6, the Li is actually substituted for Cu.
