
La theriaque d’Andromachus etait le symbole de la polypharmacie alors que la theriaque Diatessaron relevait de l’oligopharmacie. Les quatre substances la composant etaient la racine de gentiane, la racine d’aristoloche, les baies de laurier et la myrrhe. L’excipent, le miel, se trouvait parfois remplace par du sirop de menthe. On pouvait ajouter de l’extrait de genievre. L’importance symbolique du nombre quatre est soulignee par une reference aux quatre elements d’Empedocle d’Agrigente. Les proprietes therapeutiques qui etaient attribuees a la diatessaron etaient peu differentes de celles de la grande theriaque. A partir de la fin du XVIIIe siecle, cette theriaque perdit de son prestige.
