AbstractIn eukaryotes nearly 500 rRNAs, ribosomal proteins, snoRNAs and trans‐acting factors contribute to ribosome biogenesis. After more than 30 years of intense research, the incredible complexities of nucleolar function are revealed but details often remain unclear. Here we review this progress and the many intriguing questions which remain. IUBMB Life, 56: 457‐465, 2004
