The characteristics of the dynamic routing strategy based on statistical (10") sampling adopted by Italcable since 1983 on its polycentric network with the GTAI system are described. Advantages (in terms of flexibility and complementary features) and disadvantages (in terms of the determination of the optimal thresholds and of the intrinsic limits of the 10" sampling for particular traffic conditions) of this strategy are outlined. Information is provided on the transformation of the Italcable telephone network during the last five years and on its future layout, with special reference to the adoption of common channel signaling. A new dynamic routing strategy which combines some of the mechanisms specified by CCITT Recommendation E.170 is described. >
