Abstract

AbstractThe types of six species of chironomids from Patagonia and South Chile, described by Edwards in 1931 as belonging to the subgenus Limnophyes Eaton of the genus Spaniotoma Philippi, are revised. Four species belong in the minimus group of genus Limnophyes sensu Sasther 1990. L. collaris (male and female), L. subnudicollis (male), and L. brachyarthra (male and female), all are plesiomorphic members of the group and show relationships with L. er Saether as well as with species near L. minimus (Meigen). L. griseata apparently forms the sister species of the Palaearctic L. bidumus Sasther. The remaining two species are members of a new genus, Edwardsidia, characterized by coarse punctation of microtrichia on the wing membrane, strong apical seta on the antenna, acrostichals starting in front, and virga consisting of a strong, single, parallel-sided spine. The affinities of the new genus are uncertain. It may be a member of the Limnophyes group or be more closely related to Pseudorthocladius Goetghebuer, Gymnometriocnemus Goetghebuer or Parasmittia Strenzke.
