Abstract

Michael Lesk hat einmal einen Artikel geschrieben mit dem Titel „Wie geht man mit zuviel Information um?“ (engl.: What To Do When There’s Too Much Information) [Lesk 1989]. Lesk arbeitete an einem Hypertextsystem, das 800.000 Informationsobjekte enthielt — mehr als die meisten heutigen Hypertextsysteme, aber weniger als zukunftige Systeme verwalten werden. Das WWW stellte zu Anfang des Jahres 1995 mindestens zwei Millionen Informationsobjekte zur Verfugung, und die Bucherei des amerikanischen Kongresses (Library of Congress) verwaltet mehr als 100 Millionen Veroffentlichungen. Das WWW hat keine zentrale Verwaltung fur die Informationsobjekte, die auf dem WWW zur Verfugung stehen und mus keine Benutzerschnittstelle zur Verfugung stellen, die mit derart viel Information fertig wird. Allerdings stehen dem Benutzer auch keine Hilfsmittel zur Verfugung, um die Menge an Information zu nutzen, da sie nicht systematisch prasentiert oder verwaltet wird.
