Advantages of Fuzzy Controllers in Control of Technological Objects with a Big Delay

Abstract

This article comments on the issue that deals with a fuzzy logic control (FLC) of proportional–integral–derivative (PID)-type. It is used for managing complex chemical-technology objects with a big delay up to 25 s. A number of real chemical-technology devices used at the plants in the Perm Region (Russia) are considered as objects of study. The same devices are widely spread all over the world. An opportunity of a fuzzy logic control used for such objects is proved by comparison with traditional P-, PI- and PID-controllers. These controllers are tuned by Simulink PID-tuner; the fuzzy logical controls are designed and tuned by Matlab fuzzy logic toolbox. Transition processes are given by Simulink software. All necessary indicators of transition processes and quality characteristics of the controls are obtained, namely, mismatch maximum modulus and control time. PID-control indicators are used as a base for comparing to FLC. As a result, FLC indicators are significantly less than the same PID indicators are. The maximum module of mismatch decrease is about 27.2 times, while the time of transition process decrease is about 2.9 times if compared to the PID controller. So FLC usage leads to some definite improvement of technological processes ongoing in the devices. Consequently, an amount of non-conditional products could be decreased when some inlet disturbances come about.
