Abstract

Apres des siecles de haut et de bas, la theriaque, sorte de panacee universelle pour soigner tous les maux, est remise en valeur au XVIIe siecle et restera a la Pharmacopee francaise jusqu’en 1908. La vipere en est un des constituants essentiels, ce qui donna l’occasion a de nombreux auteurs de s’interesser a son reel interet therapeutique. Parmi les dizaines de substances qui la constituent, l’opium, en grande quantite, joue egalement un role-cle dans cet electuaire. Son succes mene en tout cas a la creation de variantes (theriaque des pauvres, theriaque celeste, etc.) et de contrefacons, la plus celebre etant l’Orvietan dont le succes va conduire les apothicaires a le preparer eux-memes. La contrefacon etant habituelle, il convenait des lors de preparer la theriaque en public, ce qui se fera jusqu’a la Revolution francaise. Tres critiquee, symbole de la polypharmacie de plus en plus rejetee, la theriaque va progressivement disparaitre au XIXe siecle, remplacee parfois aujourd’hui par d’autres panacees universelles hors du circuit pharmaceutique.
