L’aide apportée aux personnes âgées veuves ou divorcées au Canada : peut-on compter sur les enfants ?

Abstract

Lorsqu’une personne âgée est en perte d’autonomie, elle peut d’abord et avant tout compter sur son conjoint pour recevoir une partie importante de l’aide dont elle a besoin pour exécuter les activités de la vie courante. Toutefois, ce ne sont pas toutes les personnes âgées qui peuvent compter sur la présence d’un conjoint. Cet article s’intéresse plus particulièrement aux personnes âgées qui ont des enfants survivants, mais n’ont plus de conjoint en raison d’un décès ou d’une rupture d’union. Ces personnes peuvent-elles compter sur l’aide de leurs enfants ? La situation est-elle comparable pour les personnes séparées ou divorcées et celles qui sont veuves ? L’implication des enfants est-elle la même qu’il s’agisse d’un homme ou d’une femme âgée ? Par rapport aux veuves, les résultats montrent que les femmes séparées ou divorcées peuvent compter tout autant sur l’aide de leurs enfants. Il n’y a pas non plus de différence significative entre veufs et veuves. Toutefois, les hommes âgés séparés ou divorcés ont environ onze fois moins de chances de recevoir l’aide d’un de leurs enfants.
