Abstract

The lowland areas of the Solimões River have been undergoing intense transformations. Changes related to the environment, climate, forest resources and the water regime, have indicated new approaches regarding the production of vernacular architecture in the region. New cultural configurations and technical possibilities are also observed, which directly reflect on the solutions of traditionally produced buildings. In this extreme environment, the level of the Solimões River can vary up to 15 meters between periods of flood and ebb, making living a challenge, in order to take riverside populations in the Amazon to develop adaptive, nomadic solutions, in a complex configuration in that sustainability is the difference between life and death. This article seeks to contextualize the processes that form riverside housing through looking at the house, its configuration and analysis of its use, the built space as an interpretation of the extreme environment, cultural and technical processes in constant transition.
